Driving a car, stopping at a pedestrian (zebra) crossing to let people cross the street, I notice it’s incredibly rare for them to acknowledge it with a thankyou nod or wave, which always momentarily irks me, though I swiftly desist from taking it personally and am left with a subtle sadness for the way we dehumanise ourselves by allowing the given highway protocol, in this instance, to reduce us to automatons who don’t bother acknowledging each other –
