Exercise 1: For exquisitely stressless parenting
(and dealing with people of all sorts)


Being a father of three and having helped thousands of parents over the years, especially at the early stages – I introduced baby massage into the UK for instance and ran a weekly session with obstetrician Yehudi Gordon for years where people would come from all over the world to find out how to use Taoist energy work to help babies be strong, relaxed, healthy, bright and all the other things you’d want for your child, I’m no stranger to the challenge of conveying important message to children who aren’t listening, and to retaining your calm in the face of a child throwing a tantrum or just throwing up.

And what made it work for me as a father and to everyone I’ve helped over the years with their parenting conundrums has been deploying the Taoist mindfulness method to remain in command of yourself, because when you’re in command of yourself you’re in command of the situation.

This short exercise process is for you to use not just as a parent dealing with kids but as a person dealing with people of all sorts.


Exercise 2: For dealing with information overload



We’re sliding ever further into a seemingly unsolvable conundrum of how to manage the stress born of information saturation and associated task overload – a challenge we’re required to address before our collective head spins on its neck so fast it falls off.

And the place to start reducing the stress is by becoming cognitively aware of it – being mindful of it affecting your body, your breathing, your emotional state and so on.

Exercise 3: For dealing with stress at work



Imagine being able to maintain equilibrium throughout the working day no matter the internal or external stresses and so manage to enjoy yourself despite being in the working context – this is the exact opposite of the utterly misguided notion of so-called work-life balance, which implies when you’re working you’re not alive hence must be dead. We must dispel the harmful effect of such nonsense and be clear never to waste a single moment of this precious ride not feeling the underlying exhilaration of existence – and hence the video – watch it on the other side of this link. And let me have feedback even if it’s just to say mindfulness is silly.

    It’s all been very helpful, all of it. I’m slowing down more when I do the SFW3 passes and adding the qualities into them helps, i really like that and I’m feeling it now. It’s nice to have a description to add to them. I actually enjoy the process of even observing my own mind through the stages. Trying to block thoughts, then worrying about negativity. I’m aware now I can observe and enjoy without the dialogue/judgement/rationalizing. It’s really starting to come now, So helpful telling myself, it’s my body, my consciousness, back up, and feeling that, it’s great. Breathing through my front and OK knowing it’s just a process. I’m glad I keep trying…Thank you, Thank you. Penny

    • Ah Penny – it’s I who must thank you for providing me the delight of witnessing the very phenomenon I imagined being party to from age six when I spontaneously heard that OM and knew it was ‘God talking’, and also knew I was charged with a mission, so to speak, to spread the memory of that connection for everyone – and here you are confirming it – and bless those wily old Taoists for putting all this stuff together and bless destiny for magically bringing it to me so I could bring it to you – and aside from all that and most importantly I’m delighted you’re feeling the ease of being growing by using it all, love, Doc

  • mmm I’m wondering in what way that is different from the body felt checking of Gendlin’s ‘Focusing’…Your addition of ‘positive intention’ part seems to be the added component and I feel it can easily engage the ordinary mind (hamster on a wheel one). Also, I can’t see this approach working for someone stripped down to ‘survival’ issues – risk of homelessness/ death/ loss of loved one etc (?. For me the ‘falling back’ in my body when dealing with others’ tantrums works well, but not for dealing with real despair with tangible in-the-world-down-here consequences.

    • Well talking as someone who’s been without a home for over five years, who’s nearly died twice in that time, who healed themselves from what would have been considered fatal conditions, who’s faced nearly losing a couple of extremely close people and helped them come through, who’s helped dangerous psychotics come to a place of sanity and be able to be released from institutions over the past three years alone, using this method entirely the whole way through I can only say that even if you can’t see it, I can and that’s why I’m presenting it – I wouldn’t waste your time or mine otherwise – and what makes it different is the Taoist psycho-spatial repositioning technique and the depth of understanding and clarity both inherent to the system and to me as the teacher of it – it’s horses for courses obviously – many people don’t have the time or depth of thinking to need something like this and are content wit the more superficial approach but if you want the full picture this is certainly one place you’ll get it.     Developing this awareness of the inner world I would like to explore.
    But does it ever cause a detachment from reality?…

  • In each of the video clips you are leaning forward, leading with your head, not sitting back inside at all. Was this intentional? Were you trying to portray the posture of the average over-caffeinated, stressed parent, worker, worrier with the flailing hands and rambling repetitive dialogue?

I suggest you’re projecting – firstly I”m totally mindful of what I’m doing pretty much all the time, including being mindful of my cognitive dissonance and secondly when I worry I do it for fun as a dedicated activity for a few minutes rather than mix it in with something else in order to get the full value of the worry – I may have looked concerned – I don’t know as I never watch my own videos but if so that would merely be concern that I relay the message clearly enough for you to receive it – did you receive it or were you stuck on judging i.e. competing with me? I’d imagine the latter – and that’s ok too, as long as you’re mindful of it rather than in denial and hence projecting. Get my point? Love Doc

    • hi dear A, yes so do we all – that’s what gives human society its magnificent intensity – even just a moment slipping back behind it to observe the various dramaturgic tropes we’re perpetrating is enough to loosen the compulsive grip of the external view.

  • A couple of things struck me about the film.
    The first is that there’s a need to practise ‘stepping into our backs’ if we’re to have any chance of pulling it off when it’s actually necessary. I can’t wait until my line manager has ‘once again’ exculpated an incompetent and toxic colleague before I step into my back and watch. It makes sense to practise in less stressful situations first before ‘pressure testing’ it. We need to play with and make it ours in that playing.
    The second is that I need to play seriously. If this technique could help me not lose my temper because my manager has pressed all the right emotional buttons in me, I need to be committed to it enough at least to take the risk. My life has been marred by me not noticing chances to allow bad situations to self-correct cos all I could see was my pain and sad story. If I commit to it and it turns out to be useless, then that’s useful feedback.
    Respect to Barefoot for putting it out there for us to play with and pressure test.

    • Thanks dear Paul, respect to you likewise for considering it so wisely – I make sure to practice awareness of the back-flow as it were pretty much throughout the qigongo practice and then the martial arts practice each morning so at least I’ve got the ground prepared and then any time I feel stress coming on I now seem to remember to sink back instead of rushing forwards to solve it – it’s developing the habit of remembering that’s the key at first – but yes it is more than worth it – truly I’ve learned many hugely important methods along the way but nothing comes close to this small, silent, subtle movement within the skin.     Hi Doc , I had a very important meeting regarding possible future work with a guy .An old friend and mentor in my trade (Decoratoring) ,A meeting so loaded with history and politics that I was a tad stressed to say the least. Anyhow ,the phone rang the very moment I had watched your video…beautifully .
    So ,I stayed in my back ,opened my heart and tried to do so the things I had just seen you say ( though I did throw a couple of tricks you’ve taught me in t.b.h.) Anyway it went brilliantly. Acres of ground covered and healed.

    • Hey dear Paul, it’s music to my eyes to read that – and don’t you find that then rather than the event being merely a business meeting with a good result, it’s now a sacred moment shared with a fellow traveler, hence enhanced exponentially in value – and once that’s extended into all areas of life, you can see how this approach enhances all life exponentially – it’s really far more exciting to me than the Hadron Collider for example – and I wager possibly even more useful.

    • Hi Fran I”m so happy you picked up on that – I truly felt the spin experts who coined that phrase were perpetuating an unhealthy myth that’s been doing people a great disservice ever since – all of this is our life and each moment counts as a divine experience of we allow it – no matter the context – thanks for saying – and yes then having the simple yet profound key to shift back into perspective – the simple shifting of self from front to back – it’s like being given the keys to the realm.     I ve done this a couple of times with great effect . When I look back over this video i remember I should it so often that it becomes a second nature to me. Thanks for your love and commitment to peace and clarity and health. Your energy is beautiful.


    • Ger – hey Ger, you’re beautiful to say so, thankyou – perhaps not should but could – bit gentler in the self – and yes you certainly could be doing this most of the time – not possible to stay back all the time because life is simply too distracting and that’s as it’s meant to be but once the back-position becomes default mode it profoundly changes the experience of being us exponentially.   • Sorry Doc all this mindfulness doesn’t work for me.To be honest it seems a bit futile.
    Just a small point the dark background, dark jumper, and extra white hands just remind me of Mickey Mouse with this gloves on dancing about It almost stops you listening just to watch the “hands”

    • Hi Dave I love this comment – might you explain to me in what way being cognitively aware of your opwn internal mental processes is futile in your experience? I’d like to know and then discuss it with you. And yes agreed the black backdrop wasn’t the right one for a black top and it was either change the backdrop or the top and we couldn’t be bothered to do either at the time, figuring people might actually like a bit of mickey mouse with their mindfulness – will work harder on contrast next time, promise

    Love how you say exactly the same thing over and over in teachings, trainings, satsangs and so on …with different titles and wearing different clothes and say it in a tone of voice that is ‘as if’ you’ve never said it before….and its fascinating that no-one notices ….I think they are bound under your spell 😉 It works……it is true and real so…what else could you say….Haha I don’t have to tell you that!

    • Hi Jenny, yes I suspect it’s more helpful having the example first then working with the process – I have many dyspraxic moments myself as it happens – it’s all to do with balancing the lefty and right hemispheres of the brain as I”m sure you know – but could possibly be of help in that respect so let me know – love, Doc

  • I like the idea – I work with people in stressful situations so will try and give it a go.
    What was the noise on the video ? – sort of music – a bit weird sounding



    • Was there noise? I don’t know as I never watch them myself – maybe it was my soul singing – but yes definitely experiment with this – it’s an amazing context in which to conduct the healing process – I”ve worked extensively with people diagnosed with serious mental so-called disorders with astonishing effect with this – everyone seems to get it because it’s an innate – the only thing that makes it not seem so is societal conditioning – but once the awareness spots this possibility it naturally jumps into.
