To demonstrate the illusory nature of everyday reality, which according to the Taoist template is a result of a series of constructs you’ve agreed to buy into but which are essentially entirely relative and hence not ultimately real, try this old Taoist repositioning/reframing trick
When the world about you seems as if it’s falling apart at the seems and the bigger picture of what’s going on out there is giving rise to fear within, stop and recall the existential proposition that you create your own appearance of reality and can, if suitably focused and internally gathered power-wise, illusion the entire macrocosm differently with actual effect in real time on the ground. Any true magician will tell you so.
So rather than allow your mind to dwell on images of world in dissolution, attune your inner eye to the universally-informative and –generative presence at the heart of every atom, give it the nod to regenerate itself and see an infinite number of happy Buddha-faces winking back at you. Then watch as your imagination conjures a scenario of peace and plenty for all, in which you visualise yourself wandering happy as a cloud.
Finally draw yourself respectfully and mindfully back into the illusion of everyday life, holding the vision firm in your heart and you’ll have done an immeasurable service to humankind, for which your Tao will bless you resoundingly.
Be resoundingly blessed today.
Hope is a beautiful thing, a gift from the heavens to keep you going through thick and thin. When you’ve lost hope, you’ve lost everything, for hope is the driving force propelling you along the path to something you hope is better, no matter how hard things are on the ground.
You can’t generate hope, though sometimes you have to psychologically pull yourself up by the boot-straps when you’re feeling hopeless to trigger an increase. Hope is a preatomic quality innate to the human spirit. Hope is present naturally whenever your spirit is housed securely in your body.
The ancient Taoists taught that the energy required to keep your spirit firmly housed within derives from your heart and suggested various methods for strengthening it and thus maintain yourself in a state of hopeful optimism and cheerfulness regardless of external circumstances and conditions.
One of the most subtle yet effective and one I mention often for its many uses comprises pressing intelligently on an acupuncture point known as ‘spirit door’, which you’ll find by looking at either palm, then at the tendon leading from the soft side of the forearm in line with your little finger, and then running the forefinger of the opposite hand fairly firmly along the tendon towards the wrist until it meets the lower edge of the palm bone and then press in with full gusto, wiggling your finger tip to stimulate a strange tingling sensation all the way up to the end of the little finger. Keep pressing for approximately 20 seconds, all the while affirming repeatedly, “My spirit is within me - I have infinite reasons to be hopeful,” until you start to feel it’s true and then repeat on the other hand.
Within ten minutes or so, you’ll notice your spirit is more firmly housed within – you’ll feel more collected, gathered and whole and more optimistic as a result.
May it be so.
Alchemists of all ages have used oxymoron to describe the yin-yang paradox inherent in all manifest phenomena and situations – dark light, or black sun, for instance – as a method for getting the two to sit in harmony, ultimately the goal of all inner alchemical processes. In Taoist practice we talk about harmonising fire and water, heaven and earth, yin and yang (or actually yang and yin if we’re to keep the sequence flowing straight). When the two are in balance and working in harmony, everything in our lives from our health to our bank balance conforms by falling into a state of harmony spontaneously of itself. So rather than expend excess vital force on fiddling with the externals and details of everyday life to make it all come right, expend at least some of that chi on attending to rebalancing yin and yang within and let the outside take care of itself in due course.
Today, let’s take the heaven and earth aspect and work with that.
Heaven refers to the spiritual realms, accessible via the body through the chest and head regions.
Earth refers to the material plane, resonating in the body in the belly and pelvic regions.
By harmonising the two inside you, you cause the spiritual realm to descend to earth and thus spiritualise all your activities and affairs in future and the material plane to be elevated to the spiritual realm, thus cleansing and renewing all the energy of past action.
Imagine a bright ball of flashlight blue light spinning just above the crown of your head.
Imagine a bright ball of gold light spinning just below your crotch.
As you breathe in and out slowly, imagine each breath-in is drawing the ball above the head progressively down through your skull and chest towards your solar plexus and the ball beneath your legs progressively up through your perineum towards your solar plexus, while imagining each breath-out pushing the two balls closer and closer together, until they meet in your solar plexus and integrate one with the other until you have a flashlight blue mixed with gold ball of light spinning in your solar plexus. And as you breathe in and out, it’s growing brighter and brighter and spinning faster and faster.
You’ll find, as a result external reality falling into place in the most surprising way for the rest of the day.
May you be surprised and delighted by the results.
While you may be labouring under the delusion that you are totally constricted in your movements and options, the Tao doesn’t work like that. The only time you have absolutely no options is when you’re dead, as far as we know and even that is questionable.
However your reasoning mind may have a thousand and one valid reasons why this can’t be so, why you are actually constricted without options and if you listen to it, that’s how you’ll manifest it. If, on the other hand, you’re willing to take command of reality from the interior in order to affect the exterior, by intention alone, you don’t actually have to know how the Tao will shift things to facilitate the required change, all you have to do is free up the energy at the core of your mind (and body).
One radically effective way to do so, is to repeat no less than 81 times, so it truly penetrates your unconscious and overrides all opposition from your reasoning mind, till you actually feel the possibility it could be true, “I am free to do whatever I choose”.
I could bang on about it but the only thing to do, if it appeals to your sense of experimentation, is do it.
If you’re left with an overwhelming superstition that this might encourage you to act insanely, simply end it off with a reassuring, “My choices are wise and life-affirming for everyone”.
I’ve naturally mentioned this technique before over the years and that’s the way this organic ongoing training works – repetition of powerful techniques, because unless you’re a total Barefoot boffin, there’s no way you can remember all of them all the time. It’s all about being reminded and reminding yourself.
In fact any time in future your path feels blocked by an apparent inability on your part to make any move whatsoever, repeat the procedure. It’s a classic.
I’m free to do whatever I choose.
You don’t even need to know what it is you’re going to choose. Simply remain with the freedom and all else will fall into place elegantly of itself.
May this serve you well and free you up to enjoy a remarkable few days (and nights) now.
In terms of balancing the yin and yang energies in order to regulate your passion and sense, your daring and conservatism into the optimal mix via the inhalation and exhalation as described in today’s Wisdom Drop, dear Member, you can take it further and refine the process no end by indulging in a little Taoist loop-scooping.
